Start with source history
Record where the plant came from, when it was acquired, how it was labeled, and whether it was a cutting, graft, seedling, or established plant. A direct chain from a trusted source is stronger evidence than a label that has passed through several collections without documentation.
Compare more than flower color

“Possible match,” “consistent with,” and “identity unconfirmed” are honest outcomes. They preserve useful evidence without turning uncertainty into a permanent database error. When the history is weak or traits conflict, keeping a plant under its collection number or an unknown label may be more responsible than forcing a famous name.
